Masterton School Committee.
The regular monthly meeting of the Committee'was held on Thursday . night. Present—Messrs E; Foist (chairman), MoEweu, Hogg, Prang- "■ nell, and Daniells. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ' A letter was read from the Education Board, respecting the'appoint* ment of teachers, From,,the same body a letter was read, giving result of' the election the Board.'
A letter was read from the Secretary of the Town Lands Trustees, - in answer to au frota the : School a grant from the special picnic fond to pay for ; • prizes distributed'to the scholars at ■ ■ the- Christmas, breaking up. Tho 'v, attention of * the Committee wascalled to.a clause in iho Act in - reference to picnics and prizes, The Chairman expressed surprise that tlie Trustees s]ibuld raise, a ' f difficulty in respect to the grant for ' prizes. - . - It was explained that before the v prizes had been decided upon,- tho * Act had been consulted, and it was not expected any objection would be taken to prizes being substituted ■ ■ for a picnic upon merely technical ' grounds. .■ . The Poverty Bay Panic-
. . 'Auckland, Friday. A .telegram from Opotiki states that To Kooti with 200 men and 60 - women passed through there at ten o'olock this morning. The Premier telegraphs to: Mr Mitchelson from Gisborne that there is great excite, ment in Poverty Bay in view of Te Kooti's projected visit, and numbers of both races appealed determined to prevent his advent. Many women and children and a sprinkling of men had come in from the out districts and more are expected in to-day (Friday.) Several natives have represented to the Premier that cthey aro in bodily fear owing to in- • formation they have received from ' relatives as to Te Kooti's movements.
