Mr Soames, solicitor'of The Timea, ?avo evidence before the Commission that Mr Houston, secretary of the Patriotic League, brought the letters' to The Times; stating' ..that ■ Pigott wanted £SOOO for' them. After satisfying themselves that they were genuine, The' Times gave Houston £3OOO and retained the letters, Of this sum, Houston paid Pigott £I7BO.
