EKETAHUNA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Monday, 11th insfc. wo had a very heavy fall of rain lasting about three hours. Since thon. wo have had fine weather, On Friday the bush fires'started, and we are completely surrounded by smoke just now, The settlers seem to be taking advantage of the dry northerly winds that, are prevailing to burn up the scrub that they have roady. . There/ is some talk of one of our publicans leaving here to take charge of a brewery, and the brewer coming here. It Beems'to be a sort of swap, Talking ot publicans-1 heard'several people express surprise at the absence of hotels in Ekotahuna West. Must 1 tell them if means until the bridge over the Makakahi is buijt, then no doubt' someone will oblige. About that bridge there don't seem to be the slightest effort made towards a commencement. What's wrong. : •J notice by the bills posted here that the inhabitants of Pabiatua are about to have a treat in the shape of a performance by our Amotour Dramatic S.qcif.ty. These bills call ,it " Happy Hours." Iwonder why they, the amateurs, do not give us a taste of their quality before they travel,' I suppose they' are working on ;the theory that prophets have no honour in their own country, I wish them success anyway.'.■.y. ; ..',."
