An ordinary meeting was held at the office of the Board on the 9th itst. Present—Messrs A. Anderson (chairman), JI. Ndilson, 8. Bacon, 0. Beckman, and E. Morris. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, Correspondence inwards,— From Minister of Public Works re abolition nf the department. From Pay,mpter General, advising payment of Wper cent of subsidy. From Bank of New Zealand, advising lodgment of the same; from same, ackuow- / ledging receipts of £2G; from County -m-' Council, granting permission to erect 'abridge in Newmaa; from I). McLachlan, offering to grado section of v tjw Pentral fttogaoue Boad for £i;
from Councillor Yon Rctlen, rd; the erection of a pound; from Commissioner of ..Crown LandsJ requiring somri explanation ro oxpeiiditunvof thirdi; fiom Bank of Now Zealand, acknowledging receipt of £22' 10,-f; from ■' Colonial ■ Treasurer, advising that jJ2o,oo'ou loan account hud passed the Audit; from Hichmond and Richmond, ro revision of boundaries, of the district.—Mr .bacon thought Mr McLiichlnn hud not been treated fairly io the matter of the .Contra!' Mangaone. Koad. It wnsj resolved that the allocation of thirds be amended so as to benefit sections 31 uud 31 B 1 Mangaone; That Mr Bacon attend to a tree in the Maltaknhirivor which endangers the suspension bridge. That tho Clerk prepare an estimate of ; stationery required for the next'six months. The statement prepared by tho Clerk re the work connected with raising the loan in Farkville, was oi tiered to he laid on the table, Tho Inspector of Works in l'ark'villo reported the completion of stumping contracts Nos. 1,2, and 7, and the near completion of contracts No, 4 and C. Satisfactory progress with formation contract 1, l'arkville township, The following tenders were received for road lormation in Parkville township :—Contract 2—Bnstrom & Anderson, £237 (accepted). Declined—M. Skanahan, £31210 a 6d; Thoraaaon and Stewart £304 15s; Sheehy and Hambrook, £240. Contraot 3-H. Johnsberg £lO7 (accepted). Declined—Sheehy mid Hambrook £l9B 10s. Mr F. Dowsott waited on the Board requesting to have somethinng oxpended on the line leading to the school site in Newnian, He was informed that the Board had no funds at present which could he expended for that purpose. Accounts amounting to £2lB were, then .passed for payment, and the meeting then adjourned.
Au awkward predicament is reported from an American bathing place. A fashionably attired young fellow was approached by a nico looking young woman, who begged him to give her baby a dip. Mr C, Malfroy, one of the Government employees at the Rotoma Sanatorium, has forwarded to Wellington specimens of twigs, etc,, which havo been subjected for eight weeks to the influence of the Waikiti geyser, Whakarewarewa. Tlio thickness and beauty of the incrustation of silica are really marvellous, and encourago tho hope that by assisting Muro something may be douo to replace the lost terraces. Mr Malfroy has in fact formed basins for the purpose of cauainp such an overflow as would bo necessary, and ho estimates that presontablo terraces should bo made in tho course of about two years should tho geysers appear as active as at pro. sent,-' Poßt.'
An important decision under the licensing laws was recently given by the Homo Court of Appeal. Tho Justicos of Kendal, Westmoreland,, had declined to renew the license of an inn situated in Kentuiete, in that count}', on the ground of the remoteness of the inn from police supervision, and tho character and necessities of the neighborhood. This decision was confirmed, the Court holding that an Act of George IY, gave the licensing justices unlimited discretion in the granting now licenses and renewals. The appeal was dismissed with costs.
It is not often that three sisters make such matches as Mary, Elizabeth and Louise Caton, who died, respectively. Marchioness ot Wellesley, Lady Stafford and Duchess of Leeds. Duohess of Leeds; her sister Elizabeth, who married Baron Stafford, died in 1802. Mrs Patterson, as a sprightly widow had faciuated the Marquis of Wellesley, tho brilliant brother of the Duke- of Wellington, tho Marchioness dying in 1352, tho last years of her life having been passed in seclusion at Hampton Court Palace. Wo (Mauawatu Herald) areabliged to Mr Richard Waldon, one of the partners in the Messrs "Waldens' Brothers' hemp mill at Moutoa, for informing us of the result of the sale of sixty bales of hemp, shipped some four mouths back. The tint twenty bales realised LSI 10s per ton and tho balance L3O per ton, This is tho top price of any consignments from this district, Tho Messrs Walden have done well, they have not been at work quite live months, and have sent away over CO tons of fibre.
