Baker, head groom in the employ of the New Zealand Stud Company,' was found yesterday on the roadside at'Panmure, lying in a pool of blood with his face and head severely cut, It is supposed that he was thrown from his horse. Distnot Court. Invercarqill, January 29, The District Court was occupied all day with the action H. McLeod v. Hawson, for damages for nonfulfilment of agreement. The plaintiff is father of MoLeod Bros., drapers, who lately filed here, and entered into negotiations with the defendant to purchase the stock-in-trade for his sons. He paid to Hawson the £2OO required as a deposit with the Oflicial Assignee, and contended that Hawson was to finance the rest of the money, receiving 1175 for his -trouble and risk. A further sum of £2OO was to be deposited in the bank to cover the deficiencies, if any, on bills, given by McLeod Bros, to Hawson for the stock. The defendant .paid -the deposit to the Assignee, but'did not complete the transaction, on the. ground that liis understanding was that plaintiff was the financier for him, and not vice versa; that tho bills were to bo approved; and that the second £2OO had n'ot been placed in the banlt as stipulated. The plaintiff lost his £2OO, and no<v sought to recover, The stock having been sold to another .tenderer, the jury of four gave a verdict- for the plaintiff. McLeod is the defendant in the action by the Assignee for tlie value ofthe goods sent by his sons to him in Tapanui shortly before -filing.

House-Breaking Implements. Auckland, January 29. At the Police Court to-day John Coleman, charged with being unlawfully at large in the Colony, having beeu sentenced in Victoria to - two years' imprisonment, with hard labour, for having house-breaking implements in his possession, was ordered to ,be sent to Viotoria. "'flrgpant Lavie, a member of the Victorian Police force, gave evidence that when the conviot Coleman appealed, and was released on bail, he absconded, and did not put in an appearance when the case came up for hearing.
