It appears that a batch of five or six men were working on the lower part of > the island, breaking stones. MoManus and Cody had a quarrel, whereupon the former struck Oody seveial seveie blows on the left'side of his head over the eye and towards the top of the head with a heavy hammer he was using to bieak stones. Cody was knocked insensible in an instant. The officers'were at once acquainted with the faots. McManus was arrested and placed in nous, while the injured man was sent to Lyttelton, Upon arrival at the gaol Dr Fitzhenry, the gaol surgeon, was sent for, but the man died this afternoon. McManus has been in gaol for three months for vagrancy, an.d would have been leleased'on Monday, At one time he' was in the Lunatio Asylum, and is occasionally very peculiar in his maimer.

Isaacs was allowed to retain his security at his valuation of £2OOO. It was decided to permit E, Isaacs to retain possession of his private estate.
A Dangerous remedy. CiißisiOHtra, January 26. James Chapman, a shoemaker,, aged 53, married, with i large family, died this morning from »n overdose oi ohlorodyde to relieve neuralgia. January 27. Subsequent information respecting, the death of James Chapman by chlorodyne shows that he had been addicted to use it, but on Friday night had been drinking, and when expostulated with by his wife said he was no use here any longer. Dr Thomas applied the usual restoratives without avail.

Attempted Suicide- . Dunedin, Monday. Jemima Loith, 82 years of age, single, living with her mother at Tiiiroa Heads, attempted suicide on Saturday by cutting her throat with a knife. She had been recently been discharged from the lunatic asylum. The wound is not dangerous.
