PAHIATUA

(From Our Own Correspondent,)

Things generally are quiet here just now tho holidays are over, and mo§fc people have settled down to every-' day life,

A number of men. are at present engaged grass seed cutting, and having seasonable weather there will be some thousands of "bushels of seed turned out in 'this district, in about equal quantities of cocksfoot and rye. What the'price is to be, One can hardly foretell! The samples cau be made good now, as one of our local storekeepers, Mr Birnie, has imported a. first-class cleaiiing.inachine, which will be very extensively used, and, no doubt, a'good marketable article will be the result.- ' "

■ At a special meeting of the County Council hold to-day, a resolution was passed to'ask the Colonial Treasurer to. allot to tho, County a' sum of £12,000, under the Government Ijoans to Local Bodies Act. to be expended over a period of two years; the sum to be allocated all ;over the County, to be applied for by tlie various settlers and Associations, and allotted equitably: rates to be struck oyer special areas only. This would appear to outsiders: to be a bold.step, yet, when it is considered that the idea is only one of anticipating deferred and leasehold thirds, and getting a system of roads made earlier than under ordinary circumstances, it will not seem to bo so bold as it appears. . There are about 100,000 acres of land taken up within the County on deferred payment and perpetual lease, These lands return to the local authority for expenditure a sum equal to, say £2,000 a- year, . and the idea - will be to take loan redemption out of that fund wlien available.

This Council treated the Wairarapa North County Council with .scant courtesy in tho matter of adjustment of accounts. The least they, might have done was to have referred the matter again to the Wairarapa North Councij, slating their case, before asking the Auditor General to step in and arrange matters.
