LIBEL ACTION. . Wellington, Monday. In the Supvome Court, civil side, the libel action, with damages laid at £B,OOO, Larnach v the proprietors of the New Zealand Herald, commenced this morning. The plaintiff says that on 19th July, 1888, the defendants falsely and maliciously published articles commenting on the departure of plaintift from the colony when Pai'liauieut was in session to enter into business in Melbourne, having first asked.leave of absenco on the plea_ of illness in his family, and continuing to draw his honorarium; wherefore he claims '£B,ooo damages. Defendants admit tlio publication, but deny the.malico, and say that .the subject matter of the alleged libels became and was matter of public interest, and thereupon they published the comments set out iu the plaintiffs statement, which wero< bona fido for the public good and without sinister or malicious motives. Ihey also deny that the said publications are libellous. Sir Robert Stout, instructed by Messrs Buckley and Stafford, is for plaintiff, and Mr Gully, with him Mr Skerrett, for the defendants.
