Palmerston North, Saturday. Charles. B. Lewis has been committed for trial on a charge of rape on a girl cloven years old at Awa. litiri on December 27. The trial lasted two days,
Killed on the Railway. •Auckland, January 18. • 1 man named Archibald McUlister, foreman of the contract for the construction of the HeleusvilleKankapakapa" railway line, was killed today,, He was incharge.of an engine which, was running to a gravel pit with &■ number of tracks, For. some reason which cannot be explained, McAlister jumped off the engine and fell backwards, the truoks passing over him and oausing his death. The unfortunate man was lifty years of age, and, as far as is known, was single. Charge oi Manslaughter. 'Wakoakui, January 18. Two Maoris, Epango and Kumta Wliiti, were brought up on remand at the Police Court to-day, charged with having caused the death of W. Kolls, at Wftitotara,-'oii'January 7th. Afto hearing the evidence Kurata Whiti was discharged, there not being a prima facie case made out, Epango was committed for trial at the Supreme Court on April 21th. Bail was allowed, himself in L2OO and two sureties of LIOO eoch.
