Alleged Robbery and Desertion.

Donedin, January 17. At the Police Court, Gerald E. Hodgson was churged with stealing L 7 on the-11th January, at Wellington, the property ot Ada Cahill. .Detective Henderson said he had arrested the accused upon receiving a tolegram stating that a warrant had been issued in Wellington. He asked for a remand until the information arrived, His Worship said he ' could »rar.t no remand unless the information was before him, No arrest was legal unless the officer executing it held a warrant, not simply a telegram slating that it had been issued. Hodgson was brought before the Court later in the day on the information by Detective Henderson, who applied for nremand to Wellington. The accused said the case was a trumped up one, brought by an immoral woman in a moment of jealous temper. Detective Hendersen said they were advised it was a mean robbery and desertion, of .an unfortunate wonian and an illegitimate ohild. The case was remnn : dwl until to-morrow to enable the accused to telegraph to Wellington to see if it could be withdrawn in time to enable him to proceed to. Melbourne by the Mararoa. '

Marks, The defendant had seized the furniture of H, S. Austin, over which the Company had a bill of sale, and to prevent him from selliug, the company deposited £IOO.
