German officials accuse Mr Hacklock, United States Consul at Samoa, and Captain teary, of the United States warship Adams, of instigatinp the recent rising at Samoa by supplying Mataafa with rifles. Princo Bismarck has made a complaint to this effect to the United States Government at Washington. A good story was told us (Chronicle)' last night which is too humorous to pass over a certain resident of Feathers ton attended the sale of Education Reserves in Master ton yesterday, intending to bid for a one acre section in Feathorston, A fiopd crop of oats stood on this section and it was duly knocked down to him. In the meanwhile the late occupier hearing by telegraph the result of the sale, girded up his loins, called his menservants and maidens together, and forthwith commenced to reap the field. In two hours not a blade was to be seen and in place of the waving corn seen by the rising sun, naught but the stubble greeted the eyes of the purchaser on his return, '

The Auckland Star, referring to tho Melbourne meat fumine, and the desirability of Northern farmers shipping cattle to Melbourne, says!—" The Union S.S, Company have risen to the occasion by resuming the weekly aervico betweon Auckland and Sydney, and it is to bo hoped, if the Southern farmers do not take advantage of tho Melbourne market, that direct, communication will bo provided between Auckland and the Victorian capital. Producoia bringing' very remunerative prices in Melbourne at present, and our fine fat cattle would, even after the voyage, bo in such good condition as to command tho top price in tho market. Our supplies of stock are ample for all demands that may be made upon them. We can spare largo quantities without making meat any dearer to our own .population, and our farmers ought to be stimulated to exertion by tho knowledge that, while they would be averting the threatened meat famine in Melbourne, they would be doing remarkably Woll for themselves.
The New South Wales Government have been defeated over the Railway scandals and a crisis is imminent. In the House of Assembly on Wednesday last Mr Want, who brought former charges against Mr Fohon, ono of the Eailway Commissioners, moved the adjournment of tho Hofise in order to complain of the manner in winch the Government had conducted the enquiry. He contended that the enquiry was not a proper one,, and reitorated the charges made on a former occasion. He made a long statement of charges, which he considered the Government should inquire into and explain. Air Want made out a strong case, and influenced the members on both sides of the House who called on the Premier to explain. Sir Henry Parkeu declined to do this, and left the chamber during the discussion, and only returnod as the division was being taken on Mr Wad's motion for the adjournment, which was carried by 37 to 'Hi. Immediately the result was an-nounced-Sir Henry Parkes wired to his Excellency the Govornor, who is on a visit to Mossvale, asking him -when he would return. It is believed in certain qunrters that the Premier courted defeat as he is disgusted with the recent disclosures, and intends to resign,
Deferring to the forged ouo-pound .notes of the National Bank iu circulation in Duiiedin ten of tho notes having becu detected up to the present, the Otago Daily Times ssysThe forgeries have been ofi'ected through the agenoy of photography, and in cases where the signatures have been too dimly reproduced, they have been inked over with a pen, In tho specimen shown, to us this operation has been very clumsily done, the forger, having failed ovon to inako out the signature, atid having produced something entirely different to the original, The word" one" in tho body of the note has boon punted over apparently with oil paint, and this shows through the paper, a characteristic which is absent from the genuine notes, Tho paper which has been used is very thin, an attempt having been made to make the notes appear old by dirtying and crumpling them, Ab there are probably moro of the forged notes still in circulation, it behoves traders and others to jcarefjfjly scrutinise the National Bank' hot.es, of the .denomination named,
