From Mr A, McHutchon, stating that Mr S. A. Pull will contribute £5 to the rent of Aohonga Ferry if leased From Cr T, E. Chamberlain applying for leave of absence from this meeting; From Mr C, A, Pownall, on behalf of Mr C.P. Skerrett, solicitor, Wellington, with amended statement of claim and order in the suite Wellington Benevolent Institution v. the Wairarapa and Wellington Charitable Aid Board and other bodies. : RESOLVED;

With reference to the statement from Mr Bkerrett re. claim from Wellington Benevolent Institution no action was- taken, the Clerk intimating that he understood no further steps were likely to be taken, as tho Government ' intend' to ((.stop the amount claimed out of the subsidies.

Mr W. Smith's offer for grass on tho Eketahuna Tinui road Ras accepted on the recommendation set forth in the Finance report, The services of the Engineer was granted to the Mauriceville Eoad Board to prepare plans for a bridge. With reference to the application of the Eketahuna Board, the Council decided to grant permission to the Board to erect a culvert at Newman but declined to contribute towards its erection,

The Clerk stated that he would take the necessary steps to carry out the usual preliminaries for increased representation in the Masterton riding as early as possible. " The application of Mr James Jones'to have his sab-section withdrawn was agreed to. ' AOHONGA FERRY. The renewingof the Aohonga Perry lease, as set forth in a letter from Mr MoHutchon was then discussed, ' Mr W; lorns, as Native Interpreter, and two Natives attended in reference to this matter. In ' answer to Cr Meredith, the Chairman stated the lease consisted of 40 acres from the Natives, , Cr Meredith' thought a smaller section of ground would answer the Council's .'requirements' equally!: as well. ,/ The Chairman was of opinion that the lease would always be woith the money the Council paid for it. It was tjeoided to let the matter stand over until Mr Handysido was present, <■ LEGALISING ROADS, The Masterton Eoad Board wrote, suggesting to the Counoil the advisability of communioating with the other County Councils and the Eoad Boards in the late Wellington Provincial District, with a view to united action being taken to get the Government to insert, with the amendments proposed 1 in the Public Works Aot, a clause or clauses by which all roads now used as public' roads may be inexpensively legalised. The Chairman said there were a great many roads not legalised, andif they could get the. Government to take the suggestion up it would be well. All that was necessary was to get a short act passed, or a clause, inserted in the new Public Works Amendment Aot,

j Cr Dagg mentioned lliat when lie and Mr Beetham waited on Mr Richardson, the latter stated the same difficulty was prevalent il over the colony, and lie expressed his sympathy with the local bodies, Cr Dagg would like to see the Council go further than the suggestion made by the Masterton Board, and include the various bodies oyer the whole of the colony.

Committee also recommended that the Engineer be authorised to make arrangements for ; the collection of the toll at the Mangamalioe toll-gate > on behalf of the Counoil at the expiration of the present lease on the Slat inst,, until the railway line to Eketahuna is open for traffic.—That the Council accept the offer of Mr ,W. Smith to purchase the right, to cut grass on the Eketa-huna-Tinui road between the saddle near Mr Kennedy's and Mr Macquarrie's first gate .for the sum of £6.—That in order to set at rest any doubts as to the right of the Council to charge' toll 'at the Taiieru onled or driven horses passing through the gate urtder scale of tolls iri force, it be a recommendation to; the Counoil to alter the• said'scale by striking out the words" in tlia' first line the Council notify Mr John Tallin that if lie ■ persists in evading ; the toll at. tlie Taue'ru'by taking ; his . Tho latter would: benefit' the rqads and culverts* He understood the South County Council were about to tako into.consideration the matter of wheel tires. Settlers were heavilytaxed Jo.. get good 'roads,; and/ the CounciLwere forced in; their interest, and also those of the carriers to put on wide tires. This no doubt was very hard from a carriers pohit." Cr Maunsell thought it would be unwise to make the tires vexatious; 9J-': oppressive. .He believed the car--riers were under the impression" that tolls would not be collected until after the contracts on the Masterton-Wiii-mata road was completed,;; He did not think any harmvwould,result if narrow : tires were allowed when the road was hard.

SEW KOAD DISTRICT, The special order for the constitution of the, EangitUmau Road District was confirmed. It was decided that the first election should take plaoe on the 26th February, and the first meetiog on the list February, Mr Moore was appointed Returning Officer to conduct the first election, engineer's kepokt, The Engineer's report, which will appear in to-morrow's issue, was then read. 1 ■ With reference to the report it was resolved that application be made to the Government, under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, for £6OO for the Wangaehu bridge,. - Mr Dawson was instructed to proceed with the Te Ore Ore protective works, and Messrs Carrol and Jackson with their metalling contracts, as suggested by the Engineer's report. The, Engineer was authorised- to extend Basset and Winter's contract at Eketahuna about one mile on each end.

MISCELLANEOUS. In addition to the above, £2O was authorised to be spent oil a dam in the Whareama river, With reference to Mr Handyside's application for £2O to be . spent to protect a portion of the siiore~ and jetty at Akitio ferry. It was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Engineer, with instructions not to exceed the amount on' the estimates. The Engineer was also authorise'] to spend £BO, in conjunction with the £35 to be received from the Alfredton Road Board, on the Tiraumea track.

SETTLEMENT OF ACCOUNTS. Messrs Vile and Sedcole attended as a deputation from the Paliiatua County Council, for the purpose of arriving at a settlement of accounts between the two Councils, After a lengthy discussion the adjustment of accounts between the Wairarapa North and Paliiatua Counties, which includes a sum of about £169, together with the proceeds.of the sale of the Ngawapuri toll gate, and a portion of the Charitable Aid fund, was alloted to the Paliiatua County by the Wairarapa North County,
