The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1888. The Happy New Year.
It is tile practice of Colonial journal-' istson the closing day of tho "sad old year," to review the affairs of the Universe, and to sum up the European record, giving perhaps a hint to the Marquis of Salisbury, and a word in season to JBisinar.:kJ .Then a due' amount of space is givon to a political forecasto for Asia, Africa, America, and Australia, and coining back to New.Zealand from the grand tour, the rressnian has to give in detail the principal events m tho Colony for. the past year, and indicate the blessings that the" glad new" vear" will be supposed to bring. "No doubt a hundred years hence the journalistic 'horizon 'will- be' still further extended, and the duty of, the recorder will include'the latest political developments > in Jupiter, and improvements in the social condition of the inhabitants of Mars. For our.own part we aro content to let even Messrs Salisbury, Bismaivk &t'o. severely alone, and devote what' little space wo have to spare to home considerations. Brer since the time of King Pbaroah of Biblical Jarae, and probably a few thousand generations before he was horn or thought of, periods of plenty have succeeded jioasons of want'and distress, The seven fat and the seven lean years have alternated in oycks down to our own time. The past year, .we bolieve, has boon with us, the last and tho worst of the lean series, and the coming year, we trust, is the first of the fat batch, and, if we have suffered in the twelvemonths now'completed,' we havo a ohance to pull ourselves together in the happy new year. It has been uphill work with a good many of us of late,' and the long smooth road ahead of us is sorely needed, Retrenchment has been with us a stern reality, and there has .been on all sides a disagreeable process going on in this Colony, called facing our difficulties.- In this dreary task, the Bank of New Zealand set a. splendid example, and by righting its position, has done much to restore confidence in Now Zealand, and to help to turn., the tide of attesity into a stream of prosperity. A year ■ ago, the • .position of thjs institution was' with thoughtful men a source of anxiety;; now, it.is a matter for hearty congratulation. Sir Harry Atkinson has put- the affairs,of the Colony ; straight, and the shareholders of: the Bank of Now Zealand have put its affairs .on an unimpeachable footing, and it is easy to prophecy 'an; increasing revenue for.; tho .'Colonial oxoheqner,: and renewed prosperity for the Bank. Next'to these two considerations, the. heartiest stibjects foroongratulatious are our graziers and Their turn; has comq at last, and' their positionJias 'been suddenly reversed. A year ago, a wliolp host of them edillcfiiot make' both ends meet; now there is, oi' ought to be, a substantial surplus. • Wheat aud oats are; at fancy prices; dairyproduoe is 'high; and supj) crops as potatoes are little gold mines, ' Wopl is highor, and QlU'?ld friend ; flax' has tinge, pre' come to the front,' and somo five thousand balesofithave been shipped already this year, from Wellington, Tliojiy/Jllington Price Current, a matter of fact journal, which' never blows, in its'issue of tb'o Bfltli, says that intercolonial produce returns '.'demonstrate the superior productive. ness'of New Zealand in every branch of agricultural produce.
