FATAL accident on the MSTEKTON RAILWAY,
Engine Driver Killed. A fatal accident occarred on the down train from Mauriceville to Mastcrton by which tbe. engine driver, William Gaswell, lost his life,. It appears from what we can gather that when the train was approaching the crossing at the Koputunnga Kiver, whore the road bridge crosses the railway lino, the engine driver and his assistant wero leaning over one on each side of the engine to see if the line was clear of pigs, the engine driver's head came in contact with a iflom of the bridge and ho was flocked off the engineand fell through the railroad bridge into theKopuar- - anga River, a depth of some 16 feet, } When the drivers assistant looked lip J and saw his comrado was missing he as speedily as possible stopped the train and went back to the bridge, 'ihe lifeless body was found in tho stream and carried on board tho train and brought into Masterton. Tho body is now lying at the Masterton Railway station awaiting the inquest. Deceased who was not long Irom Oamaru leaves a wife and two children to mourn thoir loss. Tho Rev W. Roto went up to break the sad. nows to tho bereaved wife. Deceased was 28 years of age and a very steady man, and a member of the blue Ribbon, Ho wns very well liked by all with whom he camo in business contact, and respected by his employers, fle bad only been some four weeks eugaged on the Masterton line , and lived with his family at Mauriceville. The inquest takes place this afternoon at half past four o'clock.
