A Wairarapa Settler in Trouble.

At tho sitting of the Supreme Court, Blenheim, yesterday, Kobert Crew, alias James Crow, who hails from the Wairarapa district, ,was arraigned on two charges of obtaining goods and money by false pretences, From the evidence it appears that accused was on the Mahaldpawagold fields and represented to the hotelkeepertbatlio had some' £IOO lodged in tho National Bank at Blenheim. The hotelkc eper cashed his cheque for £5, but it was dishonored, Crew also represented to a storekeeper that he had a similar snm.in tho Pioton Bank and that ho was a well-to-do farmer in the Wairarapa district whore he imcl a farm and 2,000 sheep, On this representation the storekeeper cashed a cheque of his for £7. Crew paid in a draft for £IOO to the Bank of New Zealand, Picton, but the draft was dishonored. Ho endorsed tho draft as Jas. Crew, it was on a Wellington firm and it was afterwards found out that Jas. Crewe was a farmer in the Wairarapa and this led to the arrest of acoused. He was defended by Jlr Connolly,-but tho jury found a verdict of guilty on both charges. Sentwee was deferred till to-day, Robort, alias James Crewe for false pretences, two charges, got one year.
