The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER. 5, 1888. The Proposed Wellington Agricultural and Pastoral Association.

On Monday next a meeting is to he in the Wellington Chamber.of Commerce to inaugurate a Wellington } Pastoral and Agricultural Associa- ' tion. If we. thought that it were possible that a show of a metropolitan i. character could be established in • Wellington, we should certainly not be I so selfish as to withhold from it a cordial support, but this is the point , upon which we are somewhat doubt- | ful, That a Wellington Association would tend to kill tho Wairarapa shows may be taken as a matter of course, but if Wellington could make a bigger'and a better show than the Wairarapa, it would be to the advantage of this district to. support it. From what we have heard, however, we believe that the Wellington people depend very much on the Wairarapa for the support of the new project, and that instead of being prepared to offer this district large inducements to join them, thoy expect the Wairarapa to find the bulk of the ways and means necessary to establish the new undertaking. Settlors in this district, howovor, will be required to be satisfied that.tho proposed new Association will be a substantial organisation before they are likely to give in their adherence' to it, As yot~ only two names are mentioned as prominent workers in the new project, and singularly enough those two, Dr Newman aud Mr Coleman Phillips, carry absolutely no weight in agricultural and pastoral circles. The amiable M.H.R, for Thorndon may be a shining politioal light, but it was only the other day he was laughed at for describing a lot of worthless laud near the northern trunk railway route as a sort of garden of Eden. Mr Coleman Phillips is well known as a clever litterateur and an. ingenious essayist, but he is scarcely regarded as a representative -man in -pastoral aiid agricultural questions. The very-fact that he has taken the lead in this movement in ■ this district will tend to prejudico : very many leading owners, qf stock against it simply because lie is geno.rallyregardedl asa clover theorist, who on the shortest possible notice' would ] turn any existing institution topsy '■ turvy lii the same buoyant and cheerful manner that he, a glmrfc time ago, ' published a new edition of the Church ! of England prayer book. The grand , opportunity which Messrs Newman i liiifj Phillips now have is tho discord ; which pi'pvitils 'hi' pastoral show ] matters between North ajid South Wairarapa. ' This iy.aiitpfpip;i has , sickened,'many exhibitors, who j formerly iofik'o Jjyeiy interest and a.' genuine pride in tlie annual Wair- , Rfanj SJjflv/, If the'fejlington i Association makes he.adw.ay, jt will i bo because very many settjiifs in this ] district may bo persuaded to support ] a presumably'-strong .outside Show in pi'afjareiice to two weaker local ; exhibitions. %i annual show is, as' j we have over lq'ajnfjMj sufficient ■ for the Wairarapa,. and the "question j is now. virtually raised, not-as to i whether this Show should be in Mastwtflii or Carterton,,but whether i it should : be oi jhj Hulfc or in j Wellington.'' tiefore : the' WfltepJ.. decides toi.cast hi, with Welling- i fcn, there' shphld be ,a "meetingof.the ! leading stookpwiigrs in this .district, j to talte- {b jlipli).:.ps]io|);.joio, (!Qns}Mtioii, -,- ' ; ' ;■ i
