Another Disastrous Fire.
'"Wanganui, Tuesday,' A large fire at midnight destroyed the Chronicle Office, Meat Company's shop, A. J. McGregor's boot store and J. Drummond's ironmongery establishment. The Bank of NewSouth Wales was saved with great difficulty. It looked'at ouo time, as if the wholo of tho two blocks was going. The insurances are not known yet. Later.
It is supposed the fire originated in McGregor's upstairs, which was unoccupied, though it was used by them during the day, The fire broke out vory suddenly nnd the men on the Chronicle staff had just thno to get downstairs, not being able to get back for their coats, In a very short time the whole building was a'massof Hames. Tho Fire Brigado tvorked splendidly. No salvage was got out, and at one time the blocks on both sides of tho street were in danger. Insurances: £2OO Colonial, £2OO National, £270 North German, £l5O Phoenix, £3OO Sun, Liverpool, Loudon and Globe £u'oo, South British £6OO, New Zealand £BSO, Victoria £250, Imperial £2OO. Mr McGregor estimates his loss over insurance at £2500. Tho Chronicle's loss is not known yet, Tho-Herald havo offered assistance to tho Chroniole.in its present difficulty.
A Gang of Housebreakers,
A Smart Capture.
Auckland, Tuosday,. Last night a gang of four men broke into the pawnbrakjiig premises of Mr Asliflr, Queen-street, near midnight.. Constable McCoy noticed one of them, Henry George Edward Meyer leaving the- vicinity of tho establishment with some goods, and arrested, him pn suspicion. About 1 o'clock Sergeant Kelly and Constable McCoy arrested the second man Henry Benjamin Moss. The goods brought to the police station included carpenter's tools, mattresses, wicker baskets, glove boxes, prize cups, electro-plated ware, etc, Something like four sacks lull of goods had'been taken.' At 2.80 this morning two other men, Alex, Campbell aud John James Nash were arrested. A quantity of goods were found planted on the vacant allotment opposite tho Free Public Library, The Ocean Pacific Post. -
