The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1888. Municipal Larikinism.
Opinions are very much divided as to , the result of the municipal contest . to-morrow. Mr Email's friends are very confident; it is true that he Ims brokon his plighted word, that he has openly violated-his own voluntary ' obligation; brit then his party are, all the more proud,of him for achievements of this character, and i if lie could only cap his previous performances by purloining a letter, lie would no doubt go in again with flying colors as a hero who had persistently defied every legal and moral obligation which ought to control the actions of a public man. The election is, in fact, almost a. huge joke, and if it wero not that the result of it may iujuro the credit and retard the progress of the town, we should not'be disposed to treat it seriously i Of course if a majority of the burgesses are foolish enough to place Mr Eenall in power again, the old game of bluff between him and the Council will ■ continue for another year, though we trust that Councillors will not prove quitoso weak and yielding In the future, as they have been in the past. Mr Renrill will probably, if returned, be the first to laugh at tho folly of the burgesses in putting' him in power to continue tho deadlock of the past twelve months. The positiou will be that any resolution the Council desires to pass which Mr Eenall does not approve, ho will refuse to put, and any resolution which Mr Eenall may desire to put which is not acceptable to the Council will be thrown out. The question of theater wfirksjpquld bo settled in an hour if Mr Henall were really anxious to have it arranged. We caunoj help thinking that he enjoys the friction it generates between tho Council and himself, and would like the quarrel to continue a few years longer as a sort of mild stimulant for his failing powers. We nqtjps that his friends are silent on onopojiit, they do not malfe any uselessprcteuco of defending his conduct in breaking his' word to the Council, and to the public. We had plough! fjjaj like'tho Davenport PtlieriJ thejc was )jp kiipj, which he could tio-liiinseir injij which he |ie could not unloose by his clover jugglery, but in this instance- he pulled the knot a little too hard and is forced to go before tho public, as a man who claims .the privilege of opo|)]y Violating Ins own promises. The pcpple of Mgstertori who do not ; indulge-in ihri jilpj of Municipal Jarfikinisin have done their duty at this ju'npjure by bringing forward Mr Feist, a tljoroughlj' tried and trustworthy representajiye, If tho larrikin eminent js too strpng jn the town for' hjuife jjOpJSßied, ijiij bad for Mastetop and perils pa 1 fqr Mr Feist. ' Municipal Goyeranient (luring the past two years-has boon completely demoralised by Mr Eenall. ''Men in j whoili-.'tbo public hayo confidence, I and who can win a seat in the Borough .
