GREAT FIRE IN SYDNEY.
One of tbo.ruost disastrous fire's • wliich have oocurred in this city for some years broke out at 10 o'clock on Saturday night last. The building in which the lire originated is a largo four.storey '. one, situated in. Market-street, and occupied by the Sydney Evening News, I'own ■ and Country Journal, Illustrated News, and several professional offices, The Metropolitan Fire Brigade, as well '■.' as all' the , Volunteer Brigades, were smartly on tho sceno, but were . uiwblo to prevent the destruction'' of the block of buildings, though 'their efforts wero successful iu preventing the spread of the fire to the adjacent premises, which escaped with damage. Tho origin of the firo is '.-ulr known,but it musthavebad agood hold when lirst discovered,- 'as it spread with lightning rapidity, and in a. short timo there was nothing left to mark tho fine block of offices, but a pile of seething embers k, The sight while the fire was raging sajDone: of graiuleur, and it was quiteiib and a half half hours before tha danger- to the adjacent premises The amount of loss is unknown, but lite premises were insured iti tho Australian Mutual Insurance office for £33,000,- of. which,' howevor, ninetenths is reinsured in .various' offices. , The other insurances are' unknown, % but it is believed that the amount is fully £15,000, '
The whole of the machinery used in connection with the publication of tho papers mentionod is destroyed, but as the proprietors had taken tho procaution to havo a duplicate plant eroded in a sbparate building, it'is expected that publication will not be long delayed. • The proprietors of tho l|miug News estimate-their loss bvflP'fire on Saturday night at £60,000. They have made arrangements- with the proprietors of'the Sydney Morning Herald for tho pub'licatW v of theEvening News, '
' Tho Government have placed their Government Printing office at the disposal of tho proprietors of tho Town and' Country. Journal, in order that the.publication of that weekly may not be interrupted. The proprietors of tho Daily Telegraph have also offered to assist the livening News in gutting out the paper.
