Rapid Roan was bred by Mr 0, Maasey, of Timaru, andisbyKnottingly from the Cleveland, Trotter, Fidget, imported from Tasmania, by the wellknoivn horse dealer, James Stark, of Canterbury. The important point for breeders always to_ consider beforo deciding upon a sire is, what market is there for stock they are about rear, and whether it is wise to add to the already large number of weedy animals that every saleday proves have not paid for the grass it took to rear them—not to mention all the other expenses—and as there is always a good market for Rapid Roan's sort, tlio proprietor recommends him with confidence to breeders as a sire that will leave good useful and saleablo stock from any class of mares. They can rallop too, for one of his sons Morok, won the Ashburton Hunt Steeplechase, and another Oastout won a Hack Itaco at Goraldine—racing men know that it takes a good horso to win a Hack Raco now-a-days—and why shouldn't they win, when Rapid Roan is by such a champion as Knottingley, who amongst many victories includes -two Canterbury Cups, and two J. C. Handicaps, in the last of which he had KM 11 lbs, and then won,..see N. Z. Turf Record—Knottingley is by Send, from Termagant, own sister to Olenden.
