PAHIATUA.
(From, Our Own,Oorrcspondent,)
Since my last we have had very heavy floods throughout this district. The Tiraumea river has been, within three feet of its highest known height, Men in bush .camps on low lands have had washed-out experiences. Sop have had to tako to to stumps, &0., for safety, and quite a number have lost all their provisions, The Village Settlement lands, as ! usual, have been flooded, to ;tbo' detriment of settlers, btib I do uot teO» any very great damp hayhig been done; the, water djdubtlte long enough, Th'e'Mangarauiarama over-
flowing periodically this settlement is a great disadvantage to a settlement cut up in small lots, and so many settlors being ofi the laud it is of courap much more noticed than it would otherwise h if tho 1500 acres occupied by the'village settlers were iu the hands of some ten or twelve persons. No doubt something should be done' by the Crown to stop this overflow and help the settlers a little. The Crown being the landlords they should see that their tenants have country they can live upon without danger of having their "little all" destroyed periodically by floods. Nominations for candidates for seats on the new comity ' wore received by the returning officers on Saturday last as follows:—Jlangaone Biding, two members ; nominated— Messrs Davy, Avery, Miller, and Whitcombe, Puketoi Biding, two members; nominated:—Messrs Gardiner, Koss, Miller, and Tatersall. Pukimiko Biding, one member; nominated: Messrs Birnie and 1 Beese. Mangalioa Riding, one member; nominated:— Messrs Pinfold and Yilo, Maktiri Riding, one mornber; nominated :-MessrsVon Eeden and Vile. The election will probably result as follows:—Messrs Davy, Avery, Gardiner, Ross, Roesc, Pinfold and Vile.
Bushfalling is still going on apace all round the district, and mil do probably until the mosquitoes become too numerous. - ;The Town.Board's footpaths formation are completed, and tenders let for metalling.
