The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1888. THE MASTERTON SHOW.
When two years ago tho first Pastoral Show under the auspices of the Masterton Society was held in this town some of the visitors-froin the southern part of theixlistrjct spoke in disparaging terms of the quality of many of the cattle and sheep exhibits and at that time (he Show here could not in these classes compare with tho one down south, We are, however, credibly iuformed that this weak point in the Masterton Show nolongor exists, and that there are now in Wairarapa North cattlo and sheep tit to be exhibited in any show found in the Colony, In former years certain breeders in the Lower Valley were wont to Bweep the prizes iu' particular classes and no North Wairarapa exhibitor dreamt of being able to hold his own againßb them. Now these invariable winners of local trophies can no longer command the market, other exhibitors havo come into the Geld, and there is open, healthy competition, It was not anticipated that the Masterton Show this year would liavo been specially successful, because 011 the last occasion tho management carried a little too much sail, audit was deemed prudentnow to counteract former lavishness'by a judicious and timely economy, There has consequently beeu no great blowing of trumpets and beating of drums over the coming show. Nevertheless, the Committee are sanguino of success, because they find that the entries in certain leading classes aro stronger in both number and quality than they have ever before obtained, Those who are lieliiiid the scenes say' that to-morrow's show will be a head find shoulder abovo previous Masterton exhibitions, and will reveal the fact that new breeders are coming into the field in Wairarapa North, who already possess very valuable stock. It is extremely gratifying during these dull times to know that enterprise and energy is developing our pastoral and agricultural resources, Wo cannot, perhaps, corcpete with tho admirable dairy exhibits which were such a marked feature at the Garterlon Show, but we shall be undoubtedly able in many other classes to take a proud position, Let us liope that the weather will again be propitious for the show, and that to-morrow's holiday will prove to be red letter day of the ypiirfor tho settlers in this neighborhood
