The Pahiatua Village Settlement.

On Sunday the representative of l our Paliiatua contemporary walked ' through the Village Settlement, in 1 company.. with Messrs Morgan and Kemper, for tlio purpbse bf ascertain-' 1 iiig what amount of damage had been done by the overflow of the Manga- 1 rauiarama, and reported asfollows: : Along the Carisbrook road, was 1 comparatively dry until the culvert in '1 front of Mr Kdwavd's was reached. ; •Hero the water was boiling ovei 1 the road uiul scouring away- the culvert foundation, .and the Road Board will fiuil that, a: few more pounds will again be roquired to pnt the damage in' repair. At the bridge crossing the Mangaramarama on this road the water had broken through on the lower side (one' .time an overflow channel, but which had been stopped by the Board). In,this direction Messrs Dungan,Rowden, and Neilseu have been considerable sufferers,.the water flowing over tlieir gardens and washing away their crops. . The Middlo JRoad, as usual, was the worst, for hero from the Toritea bridge to Mr Kemper's corner the water wag running very swift. Along this road tlio greatest sufferers were Messrs Maher, Thompson, Hancock, Pilkinton, Kemper, and Mallion. The bouses of Messrs Mahor,Thompson, Pilkinton, and Mallion were completely surrounded by the flood, and thebest part of their gardens (as alsotlioso of Messrs Kemper,and Hancock) have .been quite destroyed. Mr Maher was awakened about 2 o'clock on Sunday morning by the rush of water, and he went outside to try and save his fowls and li calf that were in a shed. Before he could get to the shed, however, tlio fowls, which wore roosliug rather low had been drowned, and some difficulty was experienced in saving the calf. It was quite distressing to see these homesteads with the water up to the doorsteps, and the wives and families Close prisoners. Short Road, from the Middle Road to tlio hollow hear Mr Barlow's, was underwater which flowed on iutu creeks crossing the Carisbrook Road; hero the damage was not so great, but both Messrs Jessop and Barlow have nevertheless suffered. On the eastern side of the Toritea bridge, in the horse-shoe, the road was submerged, and the metal recently put on has beon mostly washed away, At tlio bridgo itself, on tlio left, the principal overflow was observable, the water going down the Middle Road, which was moro liko a river that anything else. The Toritea Road from the bridgo did not suffer so much during this flood as on previous occasions,'but tlio water was running across the road sufficiently swiftin several places to have carried away any metal that might have have put on. The Road Board would do well, to think over the matter before expending any money in metalling any portion of tlio road from Mr Mansen's to the bridge. There will be 110 security until the overflow question lias been successfully grappled. ■ Along the main road, ' Messrs Marsh'and Weadick seemed to be the only sufferers, both of wliom had their gardens covered with water. A- creek runs through Mr Hanson's property, and finds nil outlet 1 in a culvert across the main road 'in front of Mr .Marsh's; " but . the body, of water was-too great, and the surrounding , flat was consequently flooded. - Mr Mansen's garden was also mostly under water, f The Mangaramarama overflow is not confined to the village settlement'although it u.ust 'bo conceded" that: Qty greatest suffering is" ; experienced: l here.
