Talking to one of our oldest settlers tho other day, he said it was.rnildest season he had known for many years past, The country is looking splendid and the stock tolling in fat. We experienced a heavy frost here on Monday morning, which did an incalculable amount' of damage to the. early potatoes' and various fruit trees, inore especially peaches, The members of the Wellington and Wairarapa Acclimatisation Society will iio doubt bo pleased to learn that the red deer are progressing splendidly'on our hills. Your correspondent, in taking a trip across the southern spur of tho Maungaraki moiuitaius, oamo across a mob of no Jess tlian forty bead of these noble animals, For their preservation tho Society is greatly indebted to their honorary ranger, Mr N. Grace, and also to Messrs Sam and Wi Malm-, puka and 6,- Brown, three very influential nativos. .Pheasants are very numerous on the low-lying hills. Sheep mustering isnow commenced on the larger liihs, and our twopl'inV p'ipal ; stations', Messrs Buchanan's and Grace- Eros', expect •■ to; have shearing in fuU'operation within tho next few days.
