The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1888. The Wairarapa Pastoral Show.
Tyu success of the Wairarapa Pastoral meptjng this week, in spito of adverse weather, has been most encouraging to its promoters. The Show was thoroughly worked up beforehand, and the Committee, by the hearty way in which thoy set about their work, made the big Show of Thursday, last a certainty. Wo were pleased to notice that a considerable numbpr of Mastorton settlers; not; only assisted tp tlfe Show what it w, hut eyidently tqok a pride in tho number and excellence of tho exhibits as being 1 gredit to the Wairarapa. It would also seem as if the petty jealousies between the Associations had to a largo extent died away, and that tho rivalry, if it ijoes still exist, is of a friendly character, '.tp paves the way for the ultimate uniqn qf tljp two existing Societies. It is felt iiotonly In Wairarapa South, but equally asnmofi so in Wairarapa North that two Shows ought not to beheld in oneyoar. Exhibitors grumble at sonding their exhibits to two shows, not only in (jroytojvn aud Carterton, but also in Mastorton. It is ii to suppose that the Jingo sentiment, v/hio)} is loudly expressed by a few onthusiastie individuals iu favor of some centres of population, is the dominant feeling of those who are really interested in tii,e inghitpfiipe and development of a good slips' >ut!i,e Wgifapjk How. ever, the' question of is o'no perhaps fo? -which we are iiot yijjt quite ripe, Thai tllfl Bputh Wai : rarapa can mako a good allow hp been proved this week, and we. trust in a few days to show that Wairarapa North can also score another success, but ii i? mute patent that the combined enSgics #/ both Committees could give to the public §§ jplji, two days show as any country district in New Zealand can supply. Itis, perhaps, ss'tli while considering how far the wilier, which season after season has inarrod tlio cflfy'ts of the South Wairararapa committee has been idjie to the locality in which the meeting is held. - It is put down to ill-luck, %t at ftis season of the yepf Caftprtoji appears to' r attraotfaiii clouds to ft inufili'greater .degree than other contres, On Thursday last, for example, tho weatlier iu Mastov-
ton v as; contrastecl with ■;that, whioh grouiid was .really'very good.:' iln the moming their woroishowers liut tlie afternoon jras fine.; If anything will; kill tho Oartoi-ton Show ground it,will certainly be the weather,, and -this drawback is a serious matter. Howover, we do not wish to he ill-natured about Carterton weather, and no j'doubt in the smniriGi 1 time when our gardens are scorched up and withered in ' Masteston, ■ the pastures of our j Carterton friends are jubilantly green. Whether this he so or ho the moral to he drawn from last Thursday's show, is, first that we want a two days' gathering as we do not as a rule get two consecutlveperiodsofbad weather atthisseason of theyear, and secondly, we want a strong combination of the best energies of all settlers in all pti'fts of the district to be concentrated on one exhibition., '
