Christciiurch, November 2,

Early this morning a man entered tlio shop of Mrs Warne, at Lyttelton, getting in at a window. Mrs Warne heard and called out, apparently to wakon someone in the next room, when the intruder unlocked the street door and ran off. Ho was not seen, but is supposed to bo the Maori who escaped from Addington Gaol, as for two or three evenings lately a Maori purchased articles of food at the shop. Drake and Mamo cauie to his assistance, and the prisonor was overpowerod, Five silk haiulkcrchiovos, a quantity of tobacco, and 22s 4d in cash was found on him, Ho wore a coat, trousers, and hat, which were identified as having boon taken from Harvoy aud Palmer's shop. Ho stated ho had pic to Papanui on tlio morning of his escape, on Monday week, wliero he had dinnor at the hotel. Ho went to Kaiapoi, and hid in the bush there till Thursday, when ho returned to Christciiurch, and had been for a week eloeping with Chinese, Ho denied having been in Lyttelton,
