EDUCATION BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Education Board was held at Wellington yesterday, there being present Messrs j, R, Blair (Chairman, W, O. Buohanan, H. : Bunny, F. H, Fraser, J; Young,'find the Rev. J. Patterson. . . . ■

The Inspector; Mr Lee, reported on the various schools of the district, and stated that besides several registers being inaccurately kept, a number of pupil teachers were unsatisfactory in their work, andwere thus unfit for their positions, After' pne' disoussion, a motion was'tabled by Mr Bunny to the effeot that the teachers reported unsatisfactory be dismissed on three month's notice. This was seconded by Mr Fraser and carried,

A report was read from the school instructors, which referred to tho fact that certain pupil teaohera (whose names we refrain from publishing), were in the habit of absenting themselves from school from causes which were entirely inadequate. After consideration it was deoided on the motion of Mr Bunny, that those teachers who with insufficient cause, absented themselves, and failed to pass at the forthcoming examinations be notified that their services aro no longer required,

The resignations of Miss Jessie Galloway • (Masterton), Miss Jane Bannister (Taffa Flat), Miss Mary Sedcole(Paliiatua), and Miss Agnes Haigh (Greytowu), were aocepted. On tho reoommendation of the Pahiatua Committee Miss M'Kenny was appointed to fill the vacancy : caused by the resignation of Miss Sedcole. The Eketahuna Committee wrote asking for a bonus for a Miss Freethy who had been for somo time a successful teachor iu that district. The request was refused., . . . . . It was decided that the salary of Miss M. E. Jordan, .who has recently been placed in charge of an infant school be not reduced.. Leave was given Miss Flora Bunting to discontinue scholarship studies owing'to illness, and from the same oause Miss Hobbs(Qutt) was granted leave'af abßenoe for two months. . The Waingawa Committee' wrote explaining that the oauße of the recent falling off iir attendance was due to the inefficiency of Mr Jupp, the teacher, and stating that if a change was made it would be unnecessary to constitute the school an aided ono.

. Mr Buchanan speaking on .the subject, said he was aware that owing to the incompetency of the toacher (who was very aged), several children had been sent to the school at Clareville for education.

After discussion the Secretary was authorised to inform Mr Jqppthat) his services would not bo required after December noxt.. The average nttpmlauce at several country schools was referred to by the Chairman, and it was decide j that unless some improvement took place before January next these schools be declared aided.
