A Public School Burned. Blenikih, September 26. The detaohod portion of the State school in this, town was burned down to the ground last night. LiTER. Nothing further has . transpired to explain the origin of the fire that destroyed the Public school last'niglit and the conviction is deepening that it was the act of an incendiary. Two men passed the building about a quarter of an hour before the firebell rang, but saw no signs of. fire. The fire broke out in.the lavatory in the front of the building. The doors of the lavatory were locked, but, the caretaker left the windows wide open for ventilation. There had been no fire in the school for over'six weeks;, A host of children and teachers lost' their books, but those..oiv the scene first managed to save the school I cadets' rifles, of -which a large number were m the room next - the lavatory, i The building was a handsome one, ! and complete in every department. 1 It was valued at £2500. Arrange--1 ments are now nearly complete for ! holding school in one of the halls in , the town. Public opinion runs very high, and it is considered almost car- , tain that a fire-raiser'is in our midst. , Tho police are making strict and exi haustive inquiries into the circum- ) stances, but with what result has not f yet transpired. ! Electric Cars-
Auckland, Thursday. Walter Prince, on behalf of Thomson Houston, of the International Electric Company, Boston, proposes to supply the Auoklaud tramway with electric cars and power. He will undertake to provide power at a charge of 7d per mile, horses at present costing 19Jd per mile, The lesult of change would he a saving of £3OOO rer year, The Tramway Company favorably entertain the proposal.
A Lunatic Marauder' '-Auckland, Thursday. About one o'clock this morning St John's Catholio Church, Farnell was eutered, the Convent Bchool desks rummaged, and tho man then got outside aud rang the convent bell. A nun responded when the man told her ho wanted the prießt for a sick child, apparently taking her directions the man left, A hat has been found in_the church which may lead to identification. Believed to be a lunatic as nothing was stolen.
A Terrible Death* Ashburton, September 26. Samuel Kennedy, aged 19, yesterday was fixing a'belt on a grindstono at the Wakanui mill, when his arm got entangled in thi belt and he was drawn round the shaft and sustained tetrible injuries.. When the mill was stopped it waß found that his arm wbioh got entangled in the belt was torn completely away from his body at the shoulder His skull was fractured and his head fearfully gashed through being dashed against the beams as he was whirled round. He never regained consciousness and died within an hour, Attempted Suicide' Napier, September 26. . Ayoung woman named Jessop,until recently a servant at tho Caledonian Hotel, attempted .to commit suicide to-day by " taking a preparation of morenry, used in cleaning plate. Dr innes was called in in time, and the girl was removed to the Hospital, It is believed she will live.
