Chbistciiurch, September 20. The football match between tho Englishmen and Canterbury was played this afternoon at Lancaster Park in the presence of about 10,000 spectators, The ground was in magnißcient order for a fast game, but despite the favourable condition as regards the turf and weather, there was very little fast play seen during tho afternoon, both teams showing unmistakable signs ofstateness, la the
first spall Canterbury'had four tries secured against theui,, and wjth one exception the play tl)at led to these
being obtained commenced somewhat about the half-way flag, In the eecond spell tho first half-hour or so was fought out in the Englishmen's portion of the field, The Englishmen won by" ejgbt poiiits to nil. Stoddart secured
two tries, one of which he converted into a goal j Nolan also Becured two tries, and Kent one,
