The Wirarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 19, 1888. The Municipal Election.
The defeat of the Renallite faction is already determined, but it will be the duty of the burgesses to-morrow to register it. The issuo which is now being decided is one that the Eenallito party deliberately sought, and if they aro hoist with their own petard, it must be home in mind that avowedly they put the ratepayers to the trouble and the expeuso of an unnecessary contest in order to secure their own tenure of power. It is a matter of notoriety that they canvassed the town for nominations in the election which they brought about, but, to their disgust and sur. prise, they could not get together a .set of men willing to como forward in their interests tofill tlienine vacancies in the' Borough Council. Their list of nominations was a failure, and they could only claim, three candidates when all were told. A still heavier humiliation befell them when the three who bad to make a show for nine, and who were deemed to be
Renallite to tho backbone, openly disavowed their allegiance to tho modern Mopes, who desires to work a Municipal miracle for Masterton. They said i "It may seem singular that we should be nominated by Mr Eenall, aud seconded by Mr Hogg, or nominated by Mr Hogg, and seconded by Mr Eenall, but really we aro independent pandldates; we have no connection with the Eenallito party." " Ratepayers are somewhat disposed to believe that it would have been hotter for those candidates who were so nominated and so seconded to have been content to regard themselves as Senallites, as thpy would score better on that vote than on any pther, However this may bo as the Eenallife Party have no candidates who are willing to fight under their cplprs thpy make a virtue of a necessity, and support Messrs Broom, Eton, Mackay, Carman and Cullen.' It is somewhat
droll to see the party creeping under Mr (Men's cloak for protectiou, and we doubt very, much whether that popular candidate has said to them, '' (Dome uiidep W plaidje," but they are undoubtedly in the »cauld blast" and are'glad to take refuge behind anybody, Wie have the party now telling th.o burgesses to return Messrs Proora, Eton, Macltay, Cnvnian, and Oullen, and wo have those gentlemen declaring that they won't own the party, We scarcely believe that a new Broom will he a feature of the fresh Council, or that Mr Eton is destined to sit on the
moroccos. Messrs Macltay, Carnp find (Men have a better chance andyfi flhpjd not bo surprised to find either ( or alf The Eonajlite party we arp given to undersifliid, ftr/J prepared to die "happy if they only oust thflsj iwq\i Municipal watch dogs, Messrs Gapper'and. Heron. Their last hope of coming out of the fray with some sort of satisfaction is that two out
of iheii' Bfiven adversaries may be defeateii, '"J'eitas this js the finest eompliment that has yet'been Mid to \ Messrs Gapper and Heron, arid if the i burgesses have as high an opinion of' thejrcapapiW as the ,Reuallite party' jw mi will be Very ' near the top of the n'oll. In order to deoidetheissuG at stake it will be expedient for anti-Keriallite voters to give only seven votes just oh the same principletbatthe anti-Eenallites will give only five. By adopting this coiu'so the success of the seven candidates on the tioliot will bo assured, and if two on the opposite side are returned they will not constitute an element of danger in the'new Council;' There are three candidates who are not on oithor ticket,'and who can clearly claim to occupy an independent platform, At least one of these would make a desirable addition to tho Council, but in the present state of partios there is little chance of an outsider coming in. In order to deoido whother Mr Eenall is to rule Mastorton with a rod of iron and to carry in his waistcoat pocket the key of tho Masterton water supply, it is necessary for the burgesses to vote for Messrs.OHAMBEELAIN, PARBONB,FITTON,6APPEI,HEBON, HESSEY, anQ PERRY, and, as our local contemporary puts it," to leave the others to their fate."
