CORRESPONDENCE.

Cost of Conveyance.of Wool, Castlepoint v Masterton. \ (To the Editor.) ';"■'.' Sm-A local in your issue of the sth instant stated. that Mr : Lett was the. successful tenderer for Annedale wool this year, therefore concluding; that it was cheaper to take "wool from Tinui to Wellington.via Masterton than .via Castlepointi I think lean prove to you by-figures underneath that it is cheaper to tako wool via Castlepoint from Tinui to Wellington than via Masterton. . I may also inform you that although. Mr Lett's tender may be accepted for the above wool tatting,-it is not because he can do it cheaper than it can he douo by Castlepoint, nor do I think Mr Lett was the lowest tenderer, but why the lowest offer was not accepted I cannot explain. The following is the cost of conveyance of wool from Masterton to Wellington per train:

s, d. Eailage, per bale 5 4 Insurance, say on £U per.bule 3 2 Wharfage and haulage ... 0 6 Loading trucks, Masterton .„ 0 3

9 3 From Castlepoiut to Wellington per steamer:

s. d. Freight, per bale 4 0 Insurance, say oh £l4 ~. 310 Wharfage, nil Shipping at Castlepoint „. I 0

8 10 Difference in favor of Castlepoint sd. And now conies the difference in dis. tanco from Annedale to Masterton and from Annedale to Castlepoint—a difference of seventeen miles in favor of Castlepointj and a road with easier grades, so that a wagon could take five or six bales more to the coast than to Masterton from Tinui. Therefore I estimate the difference in cost of conveying the wool from Tinui to Wellington via Masterton and from Tinui to Wellington via Castlepoint is equal to. 2s Gd por bale, and in those depressed times half a crown is a consideration, lam,k, : 'Castlepoint..
