jFrom.Our Own Correspondent).- • ; Tho-fortnightly' meeting- of, the Eketahuna Licensing Bench was hold Oil* Monday last. -Pi-esent— : Me3srs Audciaon (chairman) Do Clifton, Syvoisen and Buckley. • - An . application . was mado by Mr Crewe to transfer his license of the Olub Hotel, Maogatainoka, to Mr i George Haldwell,- also to alter nauia | from Club Hotel to Dudley Arms I—Granted. • .
An application by Mr A; Anderson to transfer license of Eailway Hotel to Mr Cutler. Granted on conditions that fire escape be provided; nnd also that the transfer fee, £2, be paid to County Treasurer: in tho meantime, till transfer fees are paid, Mr Andoison to hold license.
The report of the police on Mr •Beckman's Universal Hotel was considered. It wa« decided that as Mr Tuck had been compelled to furnish a bath room Mr Beckman be compelled to do tho saino within fourteen days.
It was also decided that, a bath room should be furnished in the Olub Hotel within thejsamo period, .
The police reported that Sinclair George's (holding an accomodation license, Alfredton) premises were very badly furnished at present, but consideiing the state of the'road it was impossible to. get goods carted, there; The Bench : requested Mr Gerifge to furnish his house' as soon as the roads would permit.
' Eketahuna Hotel.—ln. this case the police reported that- thevproprietor, Mr Tuck, failed to close his billiard room and skating rink at ten o'clock. Mr Tuck maintained that the billiard room was not part of his licensed premises, and presented an agreement showing he had let the same to John Lensen. The Bench decided that the billiard room was part of the licensed premises,, snd that it should be cleired at ten o'clock.. In answer to a question by Mr Tuck as'to what action they would take if he refused to close tho room, the Chairman stated that the police would take action, Mr Boach stated that tho police declined to interfere. It was decided in the last Magistrate's Court that the billiard room and skating rink was not considered part of the hotel. The Bench maintained that it was. It is not thought Mr Tuck intends to cave in as he refuaes to clear the room at ten o'clock. The Bench have decided that if he refuses to do this they will cancel his license at tho next meeting, December 3. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS CASE. George Jackson was charged on remand before Messrs Anderson and Davie, J,P., on the information of Henry Carnell and Henry Brannigan, that he did on or about the 10th day of August, cruelly ill-treat a horse by striking him on the head wtth a stirrup iron. (There was no appearance of defendant, When remonstrated with accused offered to light witness, and said lie could do as he liked with his own, cut him up in pieces if he liked,
Mr Stewart was called and stated that he saw defendant cruelly beating the horse over the head with a stirrup iron. He afterwards'got off his horse, and took a stake from the fence and continued beating tho horse tov almost an hour. Wituesj could not leave the plough to remonstrate with him as he had a young horse in the plough breaking in, Mr.Osborne stated lie saw the horse in a horrible state from illusement. The defendant was sentenced to pay the fine of £2, and be imprisoned in Wellington gaol for two months with hard labor, and to pay all costs, amounting to L 8 10s within one month, in default to ' be imprisoned for one month, making 3 months in all.
