A Dastardly Outrage.

Bluff, Thursday.

Sailed 9 a.m. Hauroto for Melbourne. Yornon, one of theHauroto's quarter masters, made a dastardly attempt to throw Captain Mac Donald, harbor master, overboard. Early this morning the harbor master had arranged to haul tho Hauroto off the 8 a.m. to enable her to get away ejirly, and on going on board found nobody about. He therefore had twtll the mate, who asked if at the gangway. Being answered "No" the mate reprimanded Vernon for neglecting his duty. The harbormaster then went ashore'to ease tho hawsers, While doing so he heard someone coming behind him but thought it was one of tho Harbor staff. The next moment he was caught by tho legs and thrown against a pile, cutting his forehead, and but for having a hold

of the rope, ho must have gone ovorboard and been drowned, as a strong obb tide was running, and the night was very dark. Macdonald, being a powerful man, got the mastery, after a severe struggle, and gave the miscreant ft severe thrashing. The man will be arrested 'when the vessel returns. He was let go so as not to detain the Hauroto.

The Three Card Trick. m Wellington, Thursday. Thrjpoicn named Hammerton, Eagerwnjand Ohalker, appeared before the Magistrate this morning and was charged with playing the. three card trick, the former on the Basin Besorve, and the others on the wharf. Hammerton was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment, tho other two were acquitted.
