' , • Mr Lowes declined tho honor, His election, lie said, might prejudice the interests of the Society, (No, no,) and: also-liis private interests; (No.) Ho thought he could flialio a much better proposal, He .would ; move that Mr Stuckey be appointed , President. ' ; , . • ' ; : Mr D. Guild seconded' the nomination. Ho thought they were conceding no more than had been relegated to other presidents, The first President had interviewed the other Association, and the second also,
but without success. Mr Stuckey could always depend upon getting a sub-committee of the Masterton Association if tho Lower Valley wished an interview. Mi' Lowes asked the permission of his proposer and seconder to withdraw and was refused. Mr Stuckey said he quite understood Mr Lowes would not accept the office. He should he very, sorry to let it go to tho vote, and would retire in favor of Mr Lowes.. Mr Lowes said he would follow in tho steps of Mr Stuckey, seeing the reason for his objecting to accept the office was removed, and knowiug his fitness for it, lie thought they could not do better than eleot Mr Stuckey, Ho was doubtful : if the Society's interest would ■ bo conserved •iu any way by his (the speaker's) appointment, and he would like to te allowed to withdraw.' He would havo much pleasure in retiriiig iu favor. of Mr Stuokoy. Ho; appealed to his proposer and seconder, (who decliued to withdraw' his- nomination;) and; he said the only thing ho could- then do was to iefuse to act,.. Ho would'only consent to act 'if-it; was. the ' unahi' inous wish.of the meeting;; ;.; ! " Mr E,', Meredith' said they, had two excellent ..men nominated. ;>•: They \yere, however, possessed of too much modesty. To • settle matters, . lie would move formally that a ballot be takon. Mr Dagg suggested that a way out of tho difficulty would bo to elect Mr Stuckey-President, and Mr Lowes
Vice-President, . , i Mr Lowes said if they were to sleet him now it would effectually put a stop to the union- of the : two Societies. The Lower Valley would say tliat lie was elected purposely for that object. Mr E. Meredith said on "the contrary his election would give buoli an impetus to tli6 Mnsterton Society, that the other one would only bo too glad to come to them, The motion was put and carried that the ballot be proceeded with. Mr H. R. Smith and the Secretary were appointed scrutineers, and tlio poll resulteS in 17 rotes for Mr Lowes and- Id for Mr Stuckey and the former was declared duly elected, Mr Lowes returned thauks* Ho said it was with very great reluctance ho took tho office, It would have given him a great deal more pleasure to have seen Mr Stuckey President. It was only putting off the amalgamation for anothor year; as things were the election of Mr titnekoy would have been putting a round pin in a round hole, flo hoped after hjs own term of office had oxpired to seo Mr Stuckey in tho chair, Ho trusted that the members, now they had forced him into his present position, would do all tlioy could to further the agricultural aud pastoral interests and do away with tho feelings of potty jealousy that had existed between the two districts, He would not touoh upon .tho cause of those differences, it would only raise up, as Mr Euolianan had said, old sores to do so.' The other society had failed to satisfy stock breeders, hence a now Society had been formed in Masterton. He trusted they would be ready and willing to follow him if he took the lead in bringing about an amalgamation, or ono united show, Mr Stuckey returned thanks for votes accorded him. It proved the feeling in favor of one show foi' the Wairarapii was 'growing, If the poll had been taken twelve months ago on the same lines they were that ilay not half the votes \yould have been accorded him. He hoped by that time next year it will have been decided to hold but orio show, • HrK. R.
