Numbers of chimneys wei'e also damaged, ..' Later, The earthquake this morning threw down part ot the wall of a house in Madras-street North. So far as is at present known no person has been hurt. There was great destruction of glass arid crockeryware, especially in shop windows. Tho direction was apparently from north-east to southwest, and the duration estimated to be fully a minute. Nothing so severe has been felt since the shock in 1808.

At a quarter past four this morning a shock of earthquake of excessively long duration, but not heavy, was felt here, Direction East and West.

A shook of earthquake was experienced here at 4.15 today, The direotioh wis from west to east, and the shock lasted about fifty seconds, The oscillation was very violent,

Bottles were'shakeu off the" shelves of public houses. "This was the' principle damage.. All reports agree as to the direction being from'east to west, No casualties are reported. A light But prolonged earth shake wasfelt in Masterton and surrounding districts this morning at about a quarter past four o'clock. .
