Boxing Entertainment.

Those who visited Dick Maithew's sparring entertainment on Saturday evening had plenty of fun for their money, The audience was larger than usually attend these exhibitions, and the ex-champion fully carried out his programme as advertised, in whioli we must say that ho is an honorable exception to the majority ot the pugilists who have favored us with their presence. The proceedings commenced with Borne lively sparring by several of the local talent, including a couple of youngsters, who made things very lively for each other for a period of ten minutes. About nino o'clock, the ox-champion started on a somewhat difficult task of knocking- out allcomers without hurling thorn in four rounds. All of his opponents succumbed before the required four rounds were finished, the fourth one, however, (Mr C. Young) proviug a very hard nut to crack, and it gave tho champion nil his work to knock him out ffithin the requisite time. Tho proceedings concluded with a bout to a finish botween a butcher and a baker, for a pound to bo given to the winner; but, after two very severe rounds, both agreed to declare it a draw. We have no doubt that should Matthews elect to give another exhibition, ho will have havo a good house, as tho public now know that they will get value for their money, and not be swindled, us they generally are at most of the so-called sparring entortainments. At the conclusion of the entertainment, the cx-cliampiou, in tendering his thanks to those who had assited, stated that Young was far and away the best amateur ho had met during his present trip. Mr J. Thompson acted as M.C. during the evening. We understand Mr Matthews will visit Carterton and Greytown shortly,
