Masterton Pastoral and Agricultural Association.
A general committee meeting of the above was held in tho Central Chambers on Saturday last, there being a full attendance of members presided over by Mr J. Stuckey. TltE PRESIDENCY. The minutes of the last meeting having been confirmed, a letter was read from the President of the Association, Mr E. Meredith, tendering his resignation of that office, owing to ill health, ..,'.•■•,
• Tho Secretary intimated that the letter above referred to had already been under the discussion of tho Executive Committee. With the object of trying to persuade Mr Meredith to reconsider his determination to resign, tho Conmnttco appointed Mv-T, E. Chamberlain to personally interview him, but he had been uuublo to alter Mr Meredith's previous decision, After a slight discussion the President's resignation was accepted.
Mr V, Gray tllon proposed that Mr Stuckey should bo elected president of tho Association. This was. seconded by Mr Donald Donald, who folt convinced if Mr Stuckey accepted tho office, the Association would have no reason to regret its selection, Mr Stuckey whilst thanking them, said he could not accept the'position for the reason which was woll-known to them, that the two onds of the valley were working against each other. He did not believo in a divided Wairarapa, Let the two Associations unite and liold alternate shows. ! It would be better for all to have one good show annually in the Wairarapa, and on this subject ho felt tho bulk of tho settlers were with him,
Replying to Mr R. R, Meredith, the Chairman said, if elected President, ho would only accept tho office on the understanding that thero should bo only one annual show in tho Wairarapa. He preferred tho show, taking place in Masterton, but would not bind himself as to whether it should be hero or lower down tho valley, The success of both sides had been cramped by the existing ill-feeling. The Lower Valley Society, with tho excepiion of two members, were in favor of holding alternate shows.
Mr Hessey strongly objected to alternate shows being held, Mr Guild was not altogether adverse to alternate shown, but he thought the offer should come from South Wairurapa. Overtures made some timo ago were not entertained, and he hoped the Mitstcrton Society would not start a second time, but let the Lover Valley come to them, and they would then consider the matter. Mr B. B, Meredith: If alternate Shows would be an improvement, so much the better, but don't let us show wenkuess by running after them a second time, If Mr Stuckey accepted the presidency, he hoped he would do so as a supporter of the Mastcrton Agricultural Show, and independent of any feelings ho might have towards tlio other.'
Mr Btuckcy said they'must all admit it would be much bettor to Ltivo one good sbow for tho whole of the Wairarapa, wheretlioy could spend £SOO in prizes, and so bring outsiders to compete and improve our slock, ic, tbau to liavo tlio prize money, as at present, limited to about £2OO. Sinco their first dhow, Maslerton had undoubtedly gone ahead of the other townships but this should not prevent them from doing something better.
Mr 11.l 1 . E. Chamberlain would nevor agree to alternate bliows. The Mastorton Show had been a thorough success and it would grow. Ho saw no reason why they should alter existing arrangements, Mr Stuckey again re-iterated bis feelings in the mutter, and intimated if they wore not satisfied he would withdraw from being nominated. He did not recognise North and South, but a united Wairarapa. Mr Gray thought the last speaker had no grounds to object to! his being nominated. His opinions- were similar to other members and was in favor of Mastcrton as the most suitable place to hold the show, Mr Guild it.wnr not the agriculturalist who brought the show here, but the townspeople and they would inßist on its being held here,. • The Chairman felt convinced it was due to the low prizes offered that provented a superior class of stock being entered for competition from outside. ■Mr W. Perry contended that tho Waivarapa produced as good stock m
