The Return of the Governor.

Municipal Expenditure.
Donedin, August 18,
His Excellency the Governor arrived by special train from the Bluff this evening. He leaves for Christchurch by a special train at 10 o'clock. The railway line is still under water* between Mosgiel and Waihora at places, and the passengers (North and South) have to be transferred from one train to another by 'buses. Auckland, August 13.
At a recent meeting of the Swanson village Bottlers it was agreed to forward a memorial to Mr S. Percy Smith, Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking him to use influence to secure the establishment of relief works for the settlers, It is said that warnings were given by Mr Lundon against the taking up of land at Swanson by special settlers, as the soil is barren. The Finance Committee of the City Council have drawn up a report recommending a reduction in. the annual municipal expenditure of about £4600. A sum of JIB2G is proposed to be saved in salaries, and the services of the waterworks engineer and one of the surveyors are to be dispensed with, whilst the salt and freshwater baths are to be leased. It is also suggested that the number of the Council's workmen he greatly reduced. ' Christohuroh, August 18.
To-day Mr Justice Ward grantedan injunction restraining the City Council from taking a poll on the proposafto raise a loan for gasworks, on - the ground that a notice as to the poll should have been given by the Mayor, which was not done, and that, the Council.require a special Act under clause BC9 of the Municipal Corporations Act before establishing gasworks.; Tonight the City Council decided to obtain legal advice on the gas question, and if practicable, apply to set aside the injunction issued by tho Supreme Court restraining them from taking a poll on a loan for gasworks.

A man named Patterson has been arrested for robbing his mate named Coomer at Camden, The sum stolen was £4O in ten-pound notes, Constable Leece found Patterson endeavoring to change a £lo.uote at Matuara, and on searching his swag found the other three. The accused was remanded.
