MASTERTON PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.

The half-yearly meeting of tlio above Society was held on Wednesday evening in St. Matthew's Sclioolroom, there being a fair attendance of members. The Bev. W, E. I'aigo presided. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the report and balance sheet was read as follows; ' ' In presenting tho first half yearly report and balance sheet of' tho Mas- ' terton Philharmonic Society for the year ended 81st July, 1888, your com-- • mittee havo pleasure in congratulating . the Society on its sound dition, although in other matters it , has not advanced as it should have done. The Society, now numbers fifty-six performing bers, of whom twenty-four are; ladies ; and thirty-two are gentlemen. '■■ There': are also nine subscribers—three ladies and six gentlemen, Your Committee ; ' have met for business, twelve' times during the past half year. During the < half year your committee found it necessary to alter tho practice night from Friday to Wednesday, an ajtera- ; "■■ tion which appears to work satisifao-' torily. They also in .the mouth of June obtained a reduction of the -rent' of tho practice room from 10s to 7s 6d per night, Two very, successful performances have been given by the Society during • the half-year, which . materially )'■ increased the funds.. The Society has now Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera "H.M.S.Pinafore" in active rehearsal, and hopes to be able to produce: it\2i : '' an early dato.
