She put herself in tho hands of two social god-mothers ,--Mrs Cavendish Bcntinck and Lady Cork, who invited their friendß to her liouso. She soon made so much impression on those who came in contact with her that she found hersolf abloto dispense with the assistance of her friends rather sooner than they had at all bargained for, and her self emancipation gavo rise to a good deal of social disturbance between hersolf aud her god-mothers, stories of which constitute for a time, the intellectual foodW' tlie frivolous. Latterly she has had 'a very great position in London her Sunday dinners, ■ costly cotilbns, and suppers happening to suit tho taste of the Prince of Wales exactly, and gaming his warmtfMprobaition. Her husband ttas a'sraiplo man, and a silont mem- ' ber, not only in the House, but in all houses, He was so intensely liked by his Scotch neighbors in Ayrshire, that many. voted for him at tho last election in the taeth of their personal convictions, and it is not therefore expected that his successor will have anything like his majority of 1,175, , even il he can retain the seat.
