The True Facts of Gardner & Co.'s Application. (To the Editor,) Sin,—l observe in tho Star of 12th inst. n short leader on Messrs Gardner and Co.'s application to the'Alfredton Road Board, but in tho Star's not unusual stylo this is written in a misleading fashion, I have it on tho best authority that the factaof the case aro as lollows;—Messm Gardner nnd Co, wrote to (ho Road Board stating that they had, in altering their tendir lor contract No. 8, omitted one of tho hridaoH, and that it' tho Board would refer to a slip of papor with the alteration, they would find that this was the case; but on the Board doing so, there was, us plain as life, altered quotation for two bridges and 32Jchains of formation, the original contiact being two bridges and 57£ chains of formation. . Now, as your readers will seo if they comparo the the report of the Road Board meeting in the Star and tho report in your paper they will see that the Star carefully leaves out' the reason why the Road Board did mt grant the application, at the same time time carefully drawing the attention of his readers to tho report. Now, as I suppose from the semblance that the two reports wore mado out by the same person and sent to both papers, 1 of course conclude that tho explanation was purposely left out. In any case Ido not think that tiie members of the Board require to be taught by the Star, what constitutes an kmest man. Certainly I am under iho impression that the foregoing example is not exactly calculated to improve them, orshowthem the right path in which to tread. I am, ic, An Alfbedton Settler,
