TAXATION.
A public meeting of the taxpayers of tho Auckland district, convened by . the chairmen of fourteen road districts south of Auckland, was held recently ' at tho Otira schoolhouse, Papntootoe, : when it was resolved that the taxation jii-.-. of this colony is ontiroly .oat of pro- ;i W : portion to the means of the colonial producers, and unduly handicaps them; , in the world's market, It was also resolved: Ist, That in the opinion of this meeting all Acts shielding tho Civil Service from Parliamentary control should be repealed, 2nd". The systemof granting retiring allowances, •' compensation allowances, and bonuses should be discontinued, 3rd. The question of pensions should.bo recon- ■ sidcred, with a view of modifying tho ;.'. conditions npou which thoy have been granted, tho direction of reducing their amount to meet the financial necessities of the colony and also to ; bring them in harmony with theincreased purohasing porter of money.
