WRECK OF THE SUVA.

Westpobt, July 10, The Union Company's steamer Suva, when going out just before nine o'clock this morning, by somo means got into the break while crossing the bar, and being nimble- to extricate herself, took the ground, and drifted in the surf to the south for a distance of over a isilo from tho river, and then stuck hard and fast. She bumped continuously after leaving the channel and the seas broke over her, and whou she grounded, sho rolled about, and received the full benefit of the seas. The steamer now lies on a soft beach, and has apparently received no damage. At low tide she will be high and dry, and may be launched seaward in fine weather, or taken across the neck of land into tho lagoon. There was only a moderate sea on whou the Suva wont out, and directly the veesel met the sea across tho bar she seemed to lose power, This was her first trip here. Captain Todd is in change. There were two passengers—Messrs Turner and Eigg. It is expected that communication with the stranded boat will be resumed this afternoon.

The Suva lies nearly end on to the beach with seas washing over her. The cause of the accident was either the breakage of her machinery or the fact of the steamer having insufficient power to get through tho break, probably tho latter, Sho was drawing 13ft 6in and wa3 loaded with coal, There was plenty of water on the bar, The disaster is in no way duo to the port. She hid two pnsssoDgers Messrs Turner and Eigg. It is expected communication will bo held with the vessel this afternoon. •'

The engine of the North express train was thrown off the Hue, but no one, it appears, was hurt. : The 'train due at 7.40 is expected to mob town by 10,30.

. The train despatclicd to fetoli in the passengers by, the -northern express train reached town at a quarter to 11 i o'clock. It appears the express train was going dead slow when a slip occurred, and the engine, strange to say,! fell towards the bank, There was an outer bank at the place, which was 50 yards to the north of what is known as the Cliffs. The engine was a good deal damaged. One closed wagon also left the line. The passengers were notgreitly alarmed, although as some stones came falling, they were somewhat anxious. A train was des : patched from "Waitati, only threo miles distant, but the passengers with one exception decided to wait for the train from Eunedin and complete their journey, The cow-catcher was not touched, showing the slip fell out as the train approached for Dunedin. The Railway Department does not consider the block at Purakanuiofa serious charaoter, and prepared to rim the northern express as usual this mornino, but the first train leaving for north, at seven o'clock, reported a heavy slip .at the northern end of the Deborah Bay tunnel; This caused an effective block rendering traffic impossible. Gangs of men have been Bent out to clear the way .as much as possible. It is expected that, the' express train from the north will get through to-night, but this is by no means certain.'; So far as is known the south lines are all right. It is now raining harder.than every-.' . - .
