Schnapp and Ansekn's sawmill at Whitianga was totally destroyed by fire:at2 a,m.; also blacksmith's shop and three cottages,: The timber in the yard was saved. Tho : insurances in the South British (reinsured in the New Zealand for £500); in the Norwich Union, £500; in the Northern, £250; in thePhcenix, £350. The origin of the 1 fire is a mystery. This is oneoftho properties purchased by the timber syndicate, and upon which a deposit has been paid. The insurance will cover the cost of roereetion.
At 4 a.m. a firo broke out in a building owned by Tonks and Carr.occupled by Levisohn, tobacconist, and Sandiord, fruiterer. The premises were gutted. The firo originated in Levin - solm's, The insurances are;—On the building, £2OOO in South British (a partial loss); on Levinsohn's stock £BOO in the North German; on Sandford's stock, amount unknown, in the Norwich Union, His loss is £IOO oyer the insurance.
July 8. Another fire occurred iu Queenstreet early this morning in the back of the premises occupied by Jamieson and Smith, bootmakers. Some damage was done to tho rear of the building, but the stock was only slightly injured. ROBBERY,ANDATTBMPTED MURDER. Welunoioh, Monday. Acaso of robbery and attempted murder has been reported to the police by the victim, Mr Frank Cotißins, a bootmaker, whose story is that, on Saturday morning ho took a sum of money in notes from a box in his bedroom for tho purpose of paying some bills, as he. was to bo married today, and leave lor Melbourne, He was transacting this business on Saturday and yesterday. Last night between ten and eleven o'clock he was returning home from the Reclaimed Ground, and when at the back of tho Opera House, ho was seized by two men, who, lie alleges, had been shepherding him during the day. He was thrown violently to tho ground, and lost consciousness. When he regained consciousness he found himself in the water, near tho breastwork, with a wound in' his throat. Being used to water, and a good swimmer, he succeeded iu gaining the shore, and ho remembers nothing more till he reached his home. He says bo would be able to identify one of llie assailants, Dr, Rawson, who sewed up the wound, says it is a flesh wound, and is not dangerous,
