A movemont is on foot to obtain Government recognition of his services which was formerly promised but never given.
Extensive Fire at Hawera. Whole Block Destroyed,' Haweha, Thursday. A serious lire occurred in Highstreet this morning.' It was first discovered at 4.25, when. Bobbins and Pierard's large ironmongery and grocery store was found to be in Haines. Within half an hour, the fire had spread to the handsome drapery establishment of Sutton's wliich was also entirely cousuined within the same period.- The adjoining fruiterer's shop bolougingto Donnelly was also destroyed. This was the finest block in Hawera.. Sutton's building-cost over £ISOO to erect about; five years ago. It is insured in the name of Archibald Clarkson;, Auckland, ic is said for £IOOO, but this is not certain. Sutton's stock, much of it just to hand, was insured for £IOOO, and is valued at £BOOO. Robbing and Pierard's building is said to be insured for £SOO, and so far as tho insurances are known the Phccnix Oflicehas MOOon the stock of ironmongery, and the North German has i'SOO on the grocery stock, Donnelly's stock is uninsured; the building is insured for £IOO, Considerable loss is inflicted on adjoining shops, and large injury through salvagos. The front buildings across tho street also caught fire once or twice, and were scorched and iujured by the fire. The fire was subdued at six o'clock, having lasted about an hour and a half. Had tho night not been calm and frosty the fire must bavo swept half the town.
