Reid and Gray's Drain Plough.

™ A few months ago we gave a report of a trill of ono of Hcid und Cray's ', drain ploughs, which lmvo been recently introduced into tliis district. The • trial took place on Mr Jcnkin's farm, near Gore, and although successful it was essentially a " dry" trial, The ..";-, drains left by the plough were shown ''Mi. to be perfect enough, hut there being ~vnf no water on the land at that time of .* tho year it was naturally impossible to bliow any water running through tbem. A trial of a different description was made yesterday on Hie form of Messrs Walker Bros,, of Otana, who have recently purchased one of these . ploughs.' No public notice was given ' oflho trial, and consequently there was only a limited number of farmers in attendance—somo 15 or 20—at the invitation of the Messrs Walker. The trial was, however, a complete success, The plough was put to work in a .paddock which was fairly saturated with water, being in most places over the boot tops, and the drains were mado ten feet (part at a depth of from ] Sin. to 20in. Twclvo horses drew ■tp 'iie implement, and owing to the softfl» ness of the ground had a very oasy job, the owners ol tho land reckoning that with such a team they could do 12 miles an hour comfortably, Tho water ran into the openings as fast as they were made, and when the drains were dug open—(i« each ono was—(lie \ • / water was seen running through them . in a stream which nearly filled the 7 opening. All of thoso present expressed themselpes as particularly well ■ satisfied with the result of tho trial, and tho owners of tho land reckoned ./flfct it would be lit for ordinary ploughing within a week, whereas, if tindrained, it would be three months before a plough could he put into it. Mr John MoKcnno, who was one of those present, was so pleased with tho implement that he ordered one on tho spot for his own use, and we havo no doubt that next season there will be plenty of'them at work all over the district in which are hundreds of acres which can only bo turned to good ut/ account by systematic draining,—MelA j,onnie Ensign.
