Local Option in Victoria.
It 18 taken for granted that the proceedings which are being taken at the Melbourne Licensing Court towards .reducing the hotels in the Port' Melbourne and South Williamstown Districts to the proportionate number provided for by tho Amending Licensing Act will prove abortive, The Supremo Court lias authorised writs to be issued directing the Clerk of tho Licensing Court to forward to the Supremo Court tho papers conn|g|d with the local option polls tirP7:«'n the. districts mentioned, and there is little doubt that proof will bo forthcoming that the polls were illegally carried out. It is questionable whether tho action . of the licensed victuallers in taking advantage of legal quibbles is wise, for if the present Act proves inoperative steps will bo taken to obtain more legislation, and this may not ■;• be so much on the side of tho publican :'; as ,the present Act. Tho Licensing F Act of last session was admittedly a compromise, in which the great concession of compensation. for licenses
was given. Public opinion is strongly in favor, of local option, and there is a possibility that the principle of compensation may not bo acknowledged in the future.—Evening Star,
