Cup Matches. Masterton 2nd v. Te Ore Ore. Tho match for the.Junior Cup of the Wairarapa Union between the above Clubs earne off on Saturday afternoon at Masterton, resulting in a decisive victory for Te Ore Ore by 9 points to nil. The victory of the Maoris wis not unexpected as they have bad the opportunity of obtaining, pleuty of practice this season during . the Land Court sitting at Greytown, and consequently have become proi ficient in the game. Ou the other hand the Masterton team suffered through five of the selected being unable to play, their places having to be i filled by substitutes picked up on the i ground. The game was very interest- • nag to tho spectators, the running and . passing of the Maoris being greatly admired. The forward play.of the Masterton team was vastly superior to that of the opponents butwheh.the game beoauie' loose, the active. Natives had everything their own way. Ellers obtained .two marks in quick succession, and placed tlio Mastertou goal in danger,- "tho place kicks being comparatively easy, but the attempts were mulled. Kummer relieved the Mastertou, Hue by a strong run, and the play was converted to the centre, Some clover passing by Bob Ngature, Eangitaira and Pani ended by the latter going into touch at the corner flag. On the ball being thrown out, Pani took a pot at goal aud Mastertou was forced down. Paterson, by repeatedly punting into touch gained considerably for Mastorton, but a punt by Ellers being mulled opposite the'Mastertou goal resulted in heavy scrimmaging and another forcedown. From, some fast open play near the centre Bernini took a neat pass from Pani, eluded the opposing backs, and got in near the corner flag. The kick at goal was a failure. Shortly after, Ngature finished a nice run by passing to Pani who transferred the leather to G. Karaitiana, and that player grounded it under the post. Putabi kicked a goal from tho try. Mastertou pulled themselves together after this score, and tho Maori territory was invaded. Wallace put in a strong run, finishing up under the Te Ore Ore goal, but by determined scrimmaging tho natives cleared their line, and when half time was called the ball was in the centre. ' The second spell opened by some good forward play .of the Mastertou team, Kibblewbite being conspicuous with a nice dribble, which l'ani cleverly stopped, 'A.Maori rush compelled Mastertou to force down, and the kick out by Hill being stopped by Altuhata, scrimmaging opposite the -.MosUrion-guiil- ensued,"wliciiEangitaw made a successful pot at goal. Mastertou again rallied and invaded their opponents' territory, Kibblewhite and A. Welch at the head of a rush carried it down to the lino, but a toucli-iii-goal was tho nearest they could get to scoring, Another Mastertou rush followed the kick out and Te Ore Ore wero forced down. The Maori backs again shone in their passing, Pani, Bnngitaira, and Bernini carrying the leather from ono end of the field to the other, the latter planting it behind the posts, from which another goal was kicked. Nini did some serviceable running and collaring for Mastertou, in which he was ably backed up by 0, flolmwood. Another good run by Eangitaira and some excellent passing again placed tho Mastertou goal lino in danger, when Ranganui came through mill placed another try to the credit of Te Ore Ore. The Masterton team was heavily handicapped, playing as they did with several substitutes-against such a well practised team, but they nevertheless played a good uphill game, aud had they been able to havo placed their selected team on the field would doubtloss have given their opponents some trouble in getting behind their lino, Tho play of the Maori backs was excellent and was the strength of their team. The forwards in the first spell play a hard game, but lagged considerably towards the end of the gamo. 0. Holm wood captained the Masterton team,andG.Ellors the'Te Ore Ore. 0. Bannister and Toroa officiated as Umpires and Mr W. Wallace as referee. The boat for the Senior Cup on Saturday between tho Greytownand Carterton Clubs resulted in a win for the formor by a try to nil. — \— The next heat for the Junior Cup takes place on the Bed Star Ground, Masterton, on Saturday next when tho first and second teams of the Star Club try conclusions. The Mastertou and Bival (Carterton) Clubs will play for the Senior Cup on the Masterton Club ground on Saturday next. A general meeting of delegates of the Wairarapa Rugby Union will tako place at Carterton on Monday eveuhi" next, July 9th. Napier, Monday. The Maoris won the match with Hawkes Hay by eleven points to nil, they had the best of the game all through.
