Elizabeth Harvey Maddren, aged 5\ years old, died in the Hospital to-night from burns. Her mother left her at home this morning while she took two other children to school, On returning she found her in the garden with her clothes on fire. The mother was badly burned on the arms while extinguishing tne flames. The father is a ropemaker, living at Sydenham. Auckland, June 18.
David Asher anc] Pino Awanui wpre charged at the Supreme Court to-dqy with conspiracy to defraud by procuring certain aboriginal Natives to personate other Natives, some of whom were dead, but wlwi if living
would bo entitled, with other Natives, to a certain block of land, in order that the Natives so impersonating might receive the money which those whom they personated would be entitled to receive. Aslier pleaded not. guilty, and the other prisoner guiltyMessrs Williamson and Button ap. peared for the Grown, and Mr E. Ileskett for the prisoner Aslier. Some argument took place at the outset on an objection by Mr Ileskett, that the charge of conspiracy could not be preferred unless by committal or with the written consent of the Attorney General. Mr Button, in opening the case, stated that the proceedings were in connection with the Papamoa Block, situate about eight miles from Tauranga, which the Government wished to purchase. Aslier was employed by the Government to negotiate with the natives for the purchase of the Block, and was to receive £5 for each signature of the owner which ho procured, He entered into an arrangement with Pine Awanui to get the signatures by getting other natives to personate the proper owners some of whom were dead. Mr 11. F. Edgar (Clerk in the Native Land Court), Mr Gilbert Mair (Land Purchase Officer), Mr W. Maltravers, and Mr Juo. Snodgrassgayc evidence, and the Court adjourned till to-morrow. Dunkdix, Tuesday.
A meeting mostly of Clergymen carried a resolution protesting against the continued legalisation of the tofcalisator, and petitioning the House on the subject. Professor Brown and Sir K, Stout spoke in opposition to the resolution, while Mr Thos Dick expressed an opinion that the totalisator brought about a somewhat improved state of matters.

There is no alteration in the position of the Ifawea wreck since Sunday and there is not likely to be if fine weather continues. Yesterday Captain Holford, Harbor Master, and Captain Beiidall moored dredges near where the anchor was secured, The Harbor Master has not had time to make fresh soundings, as he had to leave by this morning's express for Wellington, to attend the official enquiry there to-morrow. This morning Breach for damaging the Presbyterian Church was fined Is and £6 4s costs and had a month to pay it in,

The Premier is still unwell and unable to takehis place in the House to-day. The Cabinet Council held at the Premier's residence this morning decided to take the ordinary business on the Order Paper to-dav. The further consideration of tho tariff will probably be deferred till Wednesday or Thursday.
