A deputation waited on the Government with a request for an increase of duties on grain and live stock, One speaker stated that. Melbourne capitalists had made arrangements to buy the coming crop ot Californian barley, and had instructed the agents to ship in time to forestall the Victorian harvest. The Commissioner of Customs replying, said lie would enquire into the truth of the statement, With reference to the increased duties, lie feared any increase of the kind indicated would involve intercolonial trade reprisals, which might militate against the union of the colonies. The matter will receive the full oonsidera< tion of the Cabinet at an early date, Sydney, June 14. Professor Stanich, of Sydney, claims to have discovered a remedy for phylloxera. Perth, June 14. Favourable news is being received from the Kimberley -goldficlds, and some very rich stone has been taken from the Lady Broome reef. The blacks are, however, very troublesome, and their depredations are becoming serious.
